Santa Monica, CA. August 23, 2010 – Clear Channel Airports (CCA), the world’s leading marketer of airport advertising, has teamed with Geodelic, a Santa Monica based tech start-up, to create FLYsmart, a free location-based mobile app. FLYsmart allows air travelers to quickly locate services and amenities in terminals, as well as browse live feeds of arrival and departure information.

A Blackberry versionis slated for release in early Fall. The app will initially be launched in ten of North America’s largest airports including Atlanta, Boston, Chicago O’Hare, Dallas Fort

Clear Channel Airports Bows FLYsmart App

This week brings the unveiling of a partnership between Clear Channel Airports — which specializes in place-based advertising targeting air travelers — and Geodelic, which incorporates location service technology into mobile apps, to produce FLYsmart, a free location-based app for air travelers.

The boundary between outdoor advertising and mobile media is becoming increasingly blurry, as players from both sides experiment with strategies that integrate elements of each.

This week brings the unveiling of a partnership between Clear Channel Airports — which specializes in place-based advertising targeting air travelers — and Geodelic, which incorporates location service technology into mobile apps, to produce FLYsmart, a free location-based app for air travelers.

The new service shows users nearby retailers, restaurants and other destinations. FLYsmart lets them find services and amenities in terminals, including newsstands, gift shops and restaurants. The app also offers maps of terminal concourses, live feeds of arrival and departure information and information for hotels and services around the airport.

The app is currently available for Apple iPhones; versions for Android and BlackBerrry smartphones should be available later this year. The launch airports include Atlanta, Boston, Chicago’s O’Hare, Dallas Fort Worth, Denver, Detroit, Philadelphia, Phoenix, San Francisco and Seattle. Smaller airports will come online each week.

Ron Cooper, CEO of Clear Channel Outdoor, stated: “By leveraging our vast airports network, latest digital technologies and the power of mobility, we’re creating compelling and exciting ways for brands to engage and reach new audiences.”

Airports are hot spots in the convergence of mobile, out-of-home and Internet advertising.

Earlier this summer, IBM launched an ad campaign — running through Sept. 24 — on the theme of “Smarter Cities,” including a large interactive display at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport. Installed in American Airlines Terminal 8, the display will be visible to many of the roughly 700,000 airline passengers per month served by American at JFK. The unit also features a rotating ticker with a text to mobile call to action feature.

Two years ago, JetBlue installed interactive video screens at the gates of its new terminal at New York’s JFK Airport, which allow travelers to order food for delivery from airport dining options if they can’t leave the gate.

Overall, there are 200 such screens around Terminal 5 in the JetBlue digital network, called Re:vive. It was designed by New York’s Deepend for OTG Management.

The 30 Best iPhone Apps So Far This Year

I’ve been involved in the iPhone app industry since it first began in 2008 and I have to say that it has come a long way. I’ve seen it grow from a meager launch of 500 applications in the App Store to currently over 225,000. In only two years, the industry has matured at hyperspeed. It spawned an entire ecosystem to support it from a multitude of news and editorial resources to developer engines, promotional services and ancillary niches. With over five billion app downloads and a billion dollars at stake, it’s no surprise that the app economy expanded so quickly.

Editor’s note: This guest post is written by Alex Ahlund, the former CEO and founder of AppVeeand AndroidApps, which were acquired by mobile application directory Appolicious. About this time last year, he gave us his picks of the best iPhone apps of 2009 up until then, so we thought we’d make it an annual tradition.

However, the novelty land grab is definitely over. When you run a search on the App Store, most of the gimmicks have already been created—at least twice. Clones still litter the store and it’s becoming even more difficult for quality apps to get noticed. But, if you have a bit of patience and are willing to sift through less exciting apps, there are some fantastic gems just waiting to be discovered.

So without further ado, here are my top 30 picks for applications released this year thus far. Try one or try them all.

Games:

1. Angry Birds (reviewiTunes)

Launch birds from a slingshot to topple buildings and crush piggies. There’s a reason this game has been No. 1 on the Paid List for so long. Addictive only starts to explain it.

2. Plants Vs Zombies (reviewiTunes)

A defense game by casual game creators PopCap. Protect your home from an invasion of zombies by placing plants that shoot, freeze, blow-up, crush, or generally obliterate your foes.

3. Fruit Ninja (reviewiTunes)

So simple, but strangely satisfying. Swipe to slice 3D fruit as it enters your screen. Great visuals and gratifying delivery.

4. Archetype (reviewiTunes)

One of the best 3D arena shooters for the iPhone. Smooth multiplayer and easy handling. If you’re going to play a first-person shooter on the go, this is the one.

5. Rhythm Spirit (reviewiTunes)

A rhythm-fighting game based on Japanese folklore. Very unique with top-notch production values. Can’t go wrong with ninjas, fighting, and music.

6. Ragdoll Blaster 2 (reviewiTunes)

Sequel to the fun and creative physics game. Blast ragdolls out of your canon to hit various targets. Tons of levels and really interesting puzzles.

7. Canabalt (reviewiTunes)

The iPhone version of the popular flash game. Original escape game where you run away from impending doom, dodging obstacles and crashing through windows.

8. Chaos Rings (reviewiTunes)

One of the few games priced above $10 that sold really well. A deep RPG with fantastic graphics from Square Enix.

9. The Horrible Vikings (reviewiTunes)

A trajectory game steeped in style. Launch your vikings to hit enemies and items alike. A full upgrade system and use of power-ups adds nice depth.

10. Trenches (reviewiTunes)

Fun side-scrolling strategy game where you employ the use of soldiers, machine guns, rifles and bombs to destroy your enemy.

11. God Finger (reviewiTunes)

Keep your followers healthy and working. Create buildings, farms, and taverns for your peasants to enjoy. Control the weather and become the dictator of your own little world.

12. Parachute Ninja (reviewiTunes)

Fling your ninja ball through the air in this interesting platformer. Reach higher and higher platforms, while avoiding obstacles and enemies.

13. Pocket Legends (reviewiTunes)

This MMORPG deserves attention for an ambitious endeavor. Choose a class and work on leveling up, meeting strangers, and battling enemies.

14. Monkey Island 2 (reviewiTunes)

Sequel to one of the best adventure games ever released. More humor, puzzles, and story that we’ve come to expect from this classic series.

15. Zenonia 2 (reviewiTunes)

Followup to the hit action RPG Zenonia. With more playable classes, abilities, items, story and artwork, this is a must-have for RPG fans.

Apps:

16. Foursquare (reviewiTunes)

The quintessential geo-social app, Foursquare allows users to ‘Check in’ to locations to earn points and broadcast their location. Get more Check-Ins than anyone and you become the mayor.

17. Groupon (reviewiTunes)

Groupon is a service that offers an extremely marked down deal every day. From restaurants to spas, users have been excited about Groupon since it came out. All the same convenience on your iPhone.

18. iMovie (reviewiTunes)

It made sense for Apple to bring their casual video editing software over to the iPhone when the 4 launched with hi-def recording. Very solid tool for on-the-go editing.

19. Siri Assistant (review, iTunes)

Your own personal assistant. Ask it for directions. Reminders. General information. Nearly anything. Fun and useful for anyone on the go. (Bought by Apple).

20. Twitter (reviewiTunes)

While nothing new, with the acquisition of Tweetie, the official Twitter has become the best out of them all. Contains all the features you need.

21. Wolfram (reviewiTunes)

After dropping dramatically from the $50 price tag, Wolfram has become a fantastic knowledge searching tool based on Wolfram Alpha.

22. iBooks (reviewiTunes)

I know, I know. This is a given. Provided with iOS 4.0, iBooks is the defacto book reader. Even so, it’s worth a mention for how elegant and easy it is to use compared to other readers.

23. Hulu Plus (reviewiTunes)

This is something we have been waiting for a while. The downside is that it only offers content for the paid service—not for free as it is on the web. But, if you can pony up the monthly fee, this is a great app.

24. Gowalla (reviewiTunes)

Similar to Foursquare, Gowalla allows users to ‘check in’ to a location to earn stamps. Based on GPS, it’s very addictive earning stamps and a great companion while you are out and about.

25. Dragon Dictation (reviewiTunes)

Finally, an accurate way to dictate voice to text on the iPhone. Speak naturally to send a text message, email, or anything else that can receive inputted text.

26. Free App A Day (reviewiTunes)

FAAD is an interesting service that works with developers to offer up their paid apps for free for a short time period. If you follow the iPhone app, you can snatch up some big name apps, gratis.

27. JotNot Scanner Pro (reviewiTunes)

Make your iPhone into a multi-page scanner. Has a great image enhancing ability and makes saving and sending scans pretty effortless.

28. Text’nDrive (reviewiTunes)

For those of us with a habit of checking (or even worse, responding to) email while we drive, this app provides a hands-free solution where new messages are read to you and you can respond by voice.

29. Geodelic (reviewiTunes)

An elegant “Around Me” style app showing everything that is near your location. Fun way to discover things you didn’t know existed.

30. Digg (reviewiTunes)

Digg finally made an official app and it definitely didn’t disappoint. Users can look forward to all the same functionality as the native site, as well as easy saving and sharing.

Which apps would make your top 30 list?

Location service Geodelic raises $7 million, readies for big announcements

Geodelic, the Santa Monica, Calif.-based mobile application company specializing in location-based services, has raised $7 million in a Series B funding. The round was led by MK Capital, with previous investors Clearstone Ventures Partners and Shasta Ventures also taking part. | June 28, 2010

Geodelic, the Santa Monica, Calif.-based mobile application company specializing in location-based services, has raised $7 million in a Series B funding. The round was led by MK Capital, with previous investors Clearstone Ventures Partners and Shasta Ventures also taking part.

The company is known for what it calls “searchless search,” which means that the Geodelic app (available for the iPhone and Android devices) automatically searches points of interest such as restaurants, retailers, cafés and bars near the user’s location. The application displays the results in a kind of carousel, which can be spun around on the touchscreen to find places of interest nearby and further away. Geodelic is aimed at businesses, who can use the Geodelic platform as a way to approach consumers under their own brand, as opposed to Foursquare-style cobranded campaigns, where the location service shares billing with the marketer.

Geodelic is going to ramp up its business with the new funding. (It raised a $3. 5 million Series A round a year ago.) That means working on its products and hiring aggressively. The company employs about 30 people now, having grown from a team of seven around the first round of funding, and the number is supposed to grow rapidly, says CEO Rahul Sonnad (pictured). And, Sonnad adds, Geodelic is going to announce major partners with big brands (think retailers, airports, hotels, theme parks or so) in the next three months.

Geodelic operates in a hot space – location – but the competition is fierce. As far as consumers go, there are many services to help them find a cup of coffee in a strange city like Yelp, Where, or Google Maps, for that matter. Sonnad says that the company is more about giving tools for brands to communicate with their consumers, rather than going after consumers by itself. While this is by no means an empty arena, as there are players like Socialight and DoubleDutch providing a similar service, Sonnad is confident in his company.

He already has experience from the platform side of things: His previous effort, ThePlatform, purchased by Comcast in 2006, provided a Web video distribution technology that serves as the back end for video distribution for companies like Verizon, Hulu and CBS. Now, he says, the proposition is the same, only with geo-content instead of video.

“Major retail brands like department stores or clothing stores are realizing that they have to connect with their consumers, and they are not going to do it through Google, or Citysearch, or Foursquare,” said Sonnad. “We have seen some brands create their own apps, but we are still completely in the first inning. I think this [location-based services] is going to be mainstream quicker than many think.”

While consumer-facing location-based services like Foursquare, Gowalla and Brightkite seem to be getting a lot of attention from media and, especially in the case of Foursquare, investors, the business-to-business segment seems to be quiet, Sonnad says.

“Yet all the big players like Google, Microsoft, Nokia, AT&T, Verizon are trying to figure how to get more involved in location,” said Sonnad. “I think it is going to be the same kind of mega-market that search was.”

GEODELIC SECURES $7 MILLION SERIES B FINANCING LED BY MK CAPITAL

Successfully connecting brands and consumers, Geodelic is well positioned to lead the way in location-based guides for smartphones

(Santa Monica, CA) – June 28, 2010 – Geodelic, a mobile media platform, announced today that it has raised $7 million in a Series B equity financing. MK Capital led the investment, and current investors Clearstone Venture Partners and Shasta Ventures joined the round.

Successfully connecting brands and consumers, Geodelic is well positioned to lead the way in location-based guides for smartphones.

(Santa Monica, CA) – June 28, 2010 – Geodelic, a mobile media platform, announced today that it has raised $7 million in a Series B equity financing. MK Capital led the investment, and current investors Clearstone Venture Partners and Shasta Ventures joined the round.

Founded in 2008 and incubated by Clearstone Venture Partners, the company has quickly gained traction since the launch of their first application with T-Mobile in 2009. This latest round of financing brings total investment to over $10 million. To date, the Geodelic smartphone application has been downloaded over half a million times on Android phones. It is also available for iPhone, and currently in development for Blackberry devices.

“The transformational nature of location is becoming widely recognized, and Geodelic is seeing strong momentum as a result.  We’re excited to bring MK Capital’s experience in marketing services and consumer engagement to the table, along with continued financial support from Clearstone and Shasta,” said Rahul Sonnad, Geodelic Founder and CEO. “Geodelic’s location services platform is gaining broad recognition as the leading service for enabling business to engage with their on-site consumer base, and as a result we’re seeing top carriers and brands starting to invest heavily – with real dollars driving real ROI. ”

“MK Capital has always created success through direct and collaborative partnerships with innovative entrepreneurs, and clearly our work with Rahul and Geodelic is yet another example,” added MK Capital Partner, Mark Terbeek. “We believe that there is no better way to move the power of the Internet forward than through evolutionary companies like Geodelic that are led by entrepreneurial visionaries such as Rahul and his team.”

The free Geodelic smartphone application enables users to automatically discover grocery stores, gas stations, retailers, restaurants and other points of interest within a geographical area. Acclaimed for its intuitive and aesthetically pleasing interface, Geodelic eliminates the need for users to type in search keywords as location-specific content is automatically delivered to phone screens in relevant categories. Slick integration with reservation and review sites makes it no longer necessary to switch between apps when users are making plans to discover the world around them.

The Geodelic network also contains content-specific mobile guides like Greenopia and the Hollywood Walk of Fame, which are available to anyone using the application. The Greenopia guide allows users to find and interact with thousands of eco-friendly retailers, restaurants and other service providers in 59 cities across the country. The Hollywood Walk of Fame guide enables users to discover Hollywood’s most popular attraction, locate their favorite stars of stage and screen and to access photos and biographies. Geodelic plans to enable anyone to freely create their own mobile guides in the near future. Additionally, Geodelic technology has been licensed by carriers including Korea Telecom to allow enterprise customers to quickly deploy mobile guides and to interact with their consumer base.

The company expects to announce additional product features and major partnerships with established leaders in the advertising, entertainment and wireless technology industries in the next few months.

Geodelic is based in Santa Monica, California.  For more information on Geodelic and their products, please visit www.Geodelic.com.

Geodelic location app now available for all Android handsets

Remember that hot, location-based app, Sherpa, that was launched with the T-Mobile MyTouch 3G back in the summer? Well, now Sprint and Verizon Wireless users can get in on the fun with a location app that’s available for all Google Android carriers.

Remember that hot, location-based app, Sherpa, that was launched with the T-Mobile MyTouch 3G back in the summer? Well, now Sprint and Verizon Wireless users can get in on the fun with a location app that’s available for all Google Android carriers.

Geodelic gives users the ability to swipe various locations on their handset to find anything from mom-and-pop pizza parlors to high-class hotels. The app features a feature called “passive personalization,” which adapts to the user’s tastes. The more it is used, the better the app “knows” the user.

The company shows no signs of slowing. Geodelic soon will push its location-based publishing system out to developers and businesses. Think along the lines of your favorite coffee shop alerting you to free upgrades as you near the shopping plaza.

Geodelic is available not only for Android handsets now, but also for the iPhone. That’s great for businesses interested in publishing their own mobile content as they’ll be given immediate access to the constantly growing user base. As a T-Mobile exclusive, Sherpa received 300,000 downloads and has an active base of around 100,000 monthly users.

Geodelic placed second among hundreds of mobile apps entered in the Mobile App Showdown held during last week’s CES. I downloaded Sherpa on my G1 when it was released and have fallen in love with it. It’s among my favorite location-based apps on my handset.

One of our favorite apps for Android so far, Sherpa, is a prime example location-awareness done right.  Already a great app to begin with, it’s about to get greater.  We received an advance notice that Geodelic is gearing up to release Sherpa 2.0 in December with improved speeds and a host ofnew features.

The first thing that users should notice is that the app loads 40% faster than its predecessor. The burst can be attributed to optimization and code retooling.  Also immediately visible is a refreshed user interface.  You can see from the pictures that Sherpa makes better use of the space and cleaned up the graphics.  Dare we say that it looks iPhone-esque in its design?

Among the new features in Sherpa 2.0 is integration with other API’s and tools.  For example, OpenTable makes it possible to reserve a table at a restaurant while CinemaSource gives you movie showtimes for the second half of your date night.  Twitter also gets mixed in as well.  As Geodelic explains it, “cupcake connoisseurs will automatically see tweets with codewords to get free cupcakes when they look at their mobile phones at Sprinkles Cupakes locations.”

Keep an eye out for the official press release from Geodelic as it should be hitting the wire in the coming weeks.  If your an iPhone user, you’ll be happy to know that they’re releasing a free app in early 2010 for you too.

For Mobile Start-Ups, It’s Location, Location, Location

Location remains a red-hot area for developers of mobile technology. … [Geodelic] has developed a location-aware search engine for smartphones. The application uses proprietary technology to pinpoint a user, then offers a search engine with preset buttons for finding events, people and businesses in the area. | October 23, 2009

Location remains a red-hot area for developers of mobile technology. Whether that word appears at the top of an entrepreneur’s business plan, or whether it’s just a footnote, it’s clearly crucial as phones, applications and networks continue to evolve.

A large share of the 15 up-and-coming mobile tech companies that presented at the recent Dow Jones VentureWire Technology Showcase prominently feature a location component as part of their value proposition. And they’ve raised millions of dollars on the strength of their ideas.

Santa Monica, Calif.-based Geodelic Systems Inc., for example, has developed a location-aware search engine for smartphones. The application uses proprietary technology to pinpoint a user, then offers a search engine with preset buttons for finding events, people and businesses in the area.
